Mick Poil 2nd Dan TKI |
Mick Poil started training in Judo at the age of 12 and successfully attained several levels of grading. He later took up Karate at the age of 19 with Karate Jutsu Kai, an off shoot of Kyokushinkai which he studied for a year. He then moved to Shotokan karate and stayed within that style until the present day (with some time spent cross training several other different arts including some Aikido, Jujitsu, Kick Boxing and boxing). During that time he trained with the KUGB at Canterbury, and later Dover, under several Sensei including Ohta Sensei, now head of JKA England.
He was graded Shodan in 1995 by Sumi Sensei on a visit to the UK whilst studying under Robert Sidoli Sensei. Sidoli Sensei was easily the biggest influence on Mick's Karate during the years as his student; it was during this time he really progressed with his Karate due to the amazing knowledge, skill and teaching ability of Sidoli Sensei.
Mick has spent approximately 8 years serving with Kent Police, around half as a Volunteer and half as a Regular Officer; he also worked several years as a night club doorman so has significant experience with real life confrontational situations. For the last 2 years he has worked fulltime as a newly qualified teacher for a local college.
"I believe in traditional training with strong kihon to help develop kumite skills. However I equally believe in modern teaching and training methods, with the addition of cross training some areas to achieve a well rounded street wise approach". - Mick Poil
Mick is the Sensei at the new Godington Dojo.
